The Kano State Government says it has achieved about 90 percent of its health plan in three years under Governor Abba Yusuf’s leadership.

The Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Labaran, shared this on Thursday while talking to reporters in Kano about what has been done in the health sector.

Mr Labaran mentioned that the state has fully followed the Abuja Declaration on Health. This shows their promise to boost healthcare delivery.

He explained that the administration has cleaned up the process for admitting students into health training schools. They now use a digital system, which has stopped fraud that used to cost the state over N1 billion.

"The government has also restarted the training and retraining of healthcare workers, bringing back professionalism and trust in the sector," he said.

Mr Labaran added that many health-related courses have been approved by regulatory bodies. This has created chances for doctors to move up to consultant status.

He said these steps have made healthcare institutions stronger and improved the quality of services.

Focus on Maternal Health

The commissioner noted that maternal deaths are being reduced through free healthcare for pregnant women. This includes free caesarean sections at more than 30 government hospitals.

He shared that over N60 million is spent each month to keep this program running and ensure pregnant women get good care.

"Ambulances have been provided to all 44 local government areas to help with emergency services, especially for women in labor," he added.

He also mentioned that 484 mini ambulances have been bought and will be given to all wards to help with transport during emergencies.

Upgrading Healthcare Facilities

Mr Labaran said they have fixed up 320 primary healthcare centres. The government is working to make sure every ward has a working centre.

He also said health workers are being hired through a partnership between the state and federal governments and sent to these facilities.

He mentioned that the government is also improving secondary healthcare services in all 44 LGAs.

"The availability of drugs in hospitals has greatly improved from 30 percent at the start of the administration due to investments and quick payments to suppliers," he said.

The creation of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control is another big achievement. He noted that it has boosted the state’s ability to prevent, detect, and respond to public health issues.

Mr Labaran reaffirmed the government’s promise to keep investing to ensure all residents have access to affordable and quality healthcare.
