Authorities at Federal University Birnin Kebbi have confirmed the death of Zaharadeen Nuhu, a 300-level Biochemistry student. He was killed in an attack by suspected thieves.

Zaharadeen suffered serious machete wounds during the incident at a private hostel in Kalgo Local Government Area, Kebbi State. He was rushed to the hospital but sadly died early on Thursday.

Prof. Ibrahim Magawata, the university’s Dean of Student Affairs, shared the news in a circular released on Thursday. The circular was made available to journalists in Birnin Kebbi.

The dean mentioned that Zaharadeen was from Niger State and was attacked by a group of suspected thieves at his off-campus residence in Kalgo. He said, "It is with a heavy heart and total submission to the will of Allah that the university management announces the death of our dear student, Zaharadeen Nuhu, a 300-level student of the Department of Biochemistry."

Magawata added, "He was attacked in one of the private hostels in Kalgo by a group of thieves and sustained severe machete injuries. He was taken to the hospital but sadly passed away early this morning."

The dean informed that the university management had contacted the Nigeria Police Force, Kalgo Division, and investigations into the attack have started. He also stated that security patrols in Kalgo and nearby off-campus areas where students live have been increased.

A meeting will be held with private hostel owners in Kalgo to enforce better security measures. This includes better lighting and hiring night guards. Magawata advised students to stay calm, alert, and follow the law. He urged them to avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic.

Students were also advised to avoid moving out late at night, to go in groups when necessary, and to report any suspicious people or activities to security agencies. The dean reassured that the university is dedicated to the safety and welfare of its students.

"The deceased was buried on Thursday after a funeral prayer at the mosque of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi. The university management commiserates with the family, friends, coursemates, and the entire student community over the loss, and prays for the repose of the deceased’s soul," he said.
