Kogi Security Agencies Plan for 2027 Elections

Security agencies and other groups in Kogi State are getting ready for the 2027 general election. They want to stop violence and other problems that could affect the elections.

The groups met in Lokoja under the Inter-Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES). They discussed new security threats and how to work together better before the elections.

Shehu Wahab, the Kogi Resident Electoral Commissioner, spoke at the meeting. He said the committee must use its experience and resources to help voters cast their votes safely.

Wahab added that the meeting was a chance for security agencies to look at security issues and find ways to protect the election process.

The meeting lasted about two hours and was held behind closed doors. Members talked about security issues and other matters related to the 2027 elections.

Naziru Kankarofi, the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, urged political leaders to follow electoral laws. He warned against hate speech, incitement, and actions that could disturb public peace.

He also called for responsible political communication and peaceful campaigns as the elections approach.

Mr Wahab mentioned that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is putting plans in place to help ICCES and strengthen efforts for a peaceful and honest election in Kogi.

He recognized that Kogi, like many states in Nigeria, has areas with security problems. He said the security committee aims to tackle these issues through cooperation among related agencies.

This news comes a day after PREMIUM TIMES reported that Governor Ahmed Ododo banned night arrests. He also asked traditional rulers to help ensure peaceful elections without violence.

Addressing first-class traditional rulers at the Government House in Lokoja on Monday, Mr Ododo instructed security agencies not to invade homes or make arrests at night.

He urged the traditional leaders to discourage political thuggery, intimidation, and violence. He also asked them to ensure that political campaigns focus on issues rather than religion or ethnicity.

The governor’s order and the recent security meeting show Kogi's early steps toward the 2027 elections. Stakeholders are emphasizing the need for security agencies, political leaders, and communities to join forces to prevent violence.
