The Labour Party has introduced Mrs Julie Obeta as its deputy governorship candidate for the upcoming general elections in Benue State. They see this step as a way to boost women’s involvement in governance.

The announcement happened on Monday at the party's secretariat on Otukpo Road in Makurdi. This was just after the party announced its governorship candidate, Mathias Byuan.

Byuan stated that Obeta was chosen unanimously after talking with party leaders across the state.

“We have consulted widely with the party stakeholders across the state and today they unanimously elected Mrs Julie Obeta as the first female governorship candidate who by the grace of God comes 2027 will be the first female deputy governor of Benue State,” he said.

Obeta’s nomination is a significant milestone as it is the first time a woman has been selected for the deputy governorship position under the Labour Party in Benue State.

Byuan emphasized that this choice shows the party’s dedication to inclusion and women’s representation in leadership roles.

He also mentioned that if given the chance, the party plans to transform Benue State’s economy.

The Labour Party explained that Obeta’s selection fits into its larger goal of promoting inclusivity and creating more opportunities for women in political leadership as the 2027 general elections approach.

Obeta has experience in political roles. She was part of Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign team and served as chairman of Okpokwu Local Government Area from 2012 to 2015.

In 2023, she was also appointed as a special assistant by Governor Hyacinth Alia but chose not to accept the position.
