The Labour Party has shown its support for its presidential team in the 2027 elections. They said the choice of Bintu Konto as the vice presidential candidate shows the party's commitment to fairness, inclusion, and social justice.
This announcement came on Tuesday during a meeting between the party's national leadership and Ms Konto at their National Secretariat in Abuja.
A statement from the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, mentioned that the meeting included National Chairman Nenadi Usman, presidential candidate Chibuzo Okereke, and other leaders. They all expressed confidence in the Okereke-Konto ticket.
During the meeting, Mrs Usman said that selecting Mrs Konto as the vice presidential candidate aligns with the Labour Party’s idea of “Mama, Papa, Pikin.” She explained that this reflects their inclusive values and focus on the people in governance.
She stated, “By presenting a woman as its vice presidential candidate, the Labour Party has once again demonstrated its unwavering belief in equal opportunity and social justice, standing out as the only major political party in the 2027 presidential race to accord women such a strategic and prominent place on its presidential ticket.”
Mrs Usman said she believes Mrs Konto’s professional skills, humanitarian work, and leadership experience will support Mr Okereke’s administration if they win the election.
She also praised Abia State Governor Alex Otti, calling him the Labour Party’s “poster child” and a model for good governance.
According to her, the new social welfare law in Abia State shows the party’s dedication to people-focused governance. She encouraged Nigerians who want better leadership to support the Labour Party in upcoming elections, saying the changes in Abia State highlight what Labour-led governments can achieve.
Mr Okereke, the presidential candidate, referred to Ms Konto as a humble, dependable, and experienced partner. He said her choice shows the party's recognition of the important role women play in national development.
He pointed out that leaving women out of governance is like “attempting to clap with one hand,” given their contributions to the country’s growth and population.
Mr Okereke also praised Mrs Konto’s work as a development advocate and public health expert. He said her efforts have positively impacted many communities across Nigeria.
He expressed confidence that Nigerians would benefit from their combined skills and vision if they are elected in 2027. He also recognized Mrs Usman for her leadership, calling her an inspiration for women and acknowledging her role in Ms Konto’s selection as the vice-presidential candidate.
Ms Konto thanked the Labour Party leaders for their trust in her and promised to serve Nigerians diligently if she is elected vice president. She described Mrs Usman as a leader committed to justice, fairness, and national service, saying her example inspires many.
Ms Konto shared her experiences during the early years of the Boko Haram crisis in Northern Nigeria. She said that despite losing her husband to the insurgency, she continued to provide humanitarian aid and support to affected communities.
She believes her years of humanitarian work will shape her approach to tackling Nigeria’s security issues and creating people-focused policies. She added that she joined the Labour Party because she believes it has a clear vision and practical plan for Nigeria’s leadership challenges.
The party said the meeting showed unity among its leaders and confirmed their determination to provide Nigerians with what they call competent, compassionate, and transformational leadership in the 2027 elections.
