Amateur golfers will battle for titles when the 65th Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship kicks off in November at the Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos.
FirstBank of Nigeria Limited is sponsoring the event through its first@Sports initiative. The tournament will gather amateur players who want to test their skills and improve their rankings in the game.
The championship is recognised by the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR). It attracts golfers from Nigeria and other countries, allowing participants to earn ranking points over 54 holes.
This event has become a staple on Nigeria’s amateur golf scene. Its 65th edition also marks 65 years of FirstBank’s support for the tournament.
Growing Opportunities for Golfers
Aside from competing for the title, the tournament gives upcoming golfers a chance to gain valuable experience. They will develop their skills against a strong field.
Last year, Babatunde Oyalami took home the championship title. He finished with a total gross score of 231 over three rounds. He started with a score of 78, improved to 75 in the second round, and ended with another 78 to win by three shots.
The championship has been a stage for impressive moments in Nigerian golf. Peter Eben-Spiff made history as the first Nigerian golfer to be listed on the World Amateur Golf Ranking after winning the 58th edition.
Expectations for This Year
This year’s competition is expected to continue that legacy. Players will chase the title and look to boost their amateur golf credentials.
The Lagos Amateur Open is played over 54 holes. It tests competitors’ ability to keep up their performance across three rounds at the Ikoyi Club course.
The November event will be another chapter in one of Nigeria’s oldest amateur golf championships. Players will compete for titles and the chance to make a name for themselves in the sport.
