A cycling group in Lagos, Velong Community, is pushing for cycling as a way to help young people grow and take on leadership roles. They made this known during a visit to D.T. Autocafe in Lekki Phase 1.
A 28-member team from the group met with the company's Chief Executive, Dayo Adeola. They discussed partnerships to reach more young Nigerians through cycling for over an hour.
Engineer Femi Thomas, who coordinates the group, said cycling gives more than just physical exercise.
“Cycling teaches patience, teamwork, and resilience. These are the very qualities we are instilling in our young people to prepare them for leadership,” he said.
Velong Community started as a small group of cycling lovers. Now, it has turned into a structured mentorship program. They have introduced over 200 young people to cycling through weekly rides and workshops, as well as sessions on civic responsibility and entrepreneurship.
“We are building more than cyclists; we are building leaders,” Thomas said.
The group believes that having safe places to ride and support from private companies is key to growing their initiative.
Adeola praised the group and promised to continue supporting grassroots programs for youth.
“This visit aligns with our goal of empowering the next generation through practical skills, mobility, and opportunity,” he said.
He also mentioned that D.T. Autocafe plans to offer logistical support and a dedicated space at its Fadeyi workshop. This space will be for bicycle maintenance training, aimed at creating jobs for young people.
Velong Community has its next ride planned for November.
