The Lagos State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has set up a seven-member electoral committee to organise elections for a new executive committee.
The committee, called the SWAN Electoral Committee (SWANECO), was formed on Friday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, during the chapter’s Extraordinary Congress.
Patrick Omorodion, who heads the chapter’s caretaker committee, launched the electoral body. Mozez Praiz is the chair of the committee, while McAnthony Anaelechukwu serves as the secretary.
Other members include Abdul Rahmone Abulore, Soliu Adeyemo, Tega Onajaife, Jovita Ekeh, and Suo Chapele.
Mr Omorodion stated that creating this committee is part of the mandate given to the caretaker committee by the national body. This is to strengthen the chapter’s administration and ensure a credible election.
He added that the aim is to bring back stability and ensure the chapter has a functional executive committee.
Mr Praiz, speaking for the electoral committee, promised to handle the task responsibly. He aims to help bring in a new executive committee that can energise the chapter.
He mentioned activities like the now-dormant SWAN Cup as examples of projects that could be revived to boost member engagement.
Enitan Obadina, SWAN’s national welfare officer, represented the national executive at the congress. He described the inauguration as a good step for the Lagos chapter.
“As one of the country’s leading chapters, we are glad that Lagos is moving in the right direction. National SWAN, led by its president, Isaiah Benjamin, is providing support to make sure the process follows the constitution and is inclusive for members. This will help avoid past challenges,” he said.
Veterans of the association who were present at the ceremony included Mitchel Obi, Kunle Solaja, Felix Awogu, Godwin Enakhena, Emma Jemegah, Joe Apu, Pius Ayinor, Mike Mayaki, and Smart Ebhodaghe.
The national body set up the Lagos SWAN caretaker committee on 9 October. Mr Omorodion is the chairman, Oni Afolabi is the secretary, and Anulika Menanya is also a member.
The electoral committee is expected to manage the process of electing a new executive for the Lagos chapter.
