Poland striker Robert Lewandowski is aiming for a special goal when Poland plays against the Super Eagles in a friendly match. The game is set for today at the Stadion PGE Narodowy in Warsaw, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Lewandowski has played 166 matches for Poland and scored 89 times. If he finds the net against Nigeria, he will hit the 90-goal mark. This will further extend his record as the top scorer for Poland and bring him closer to 100 goals.
He first joined the national team on September 10, 2008.
At 37 years old, Lewandowski is expected to start the match. He only played 45 minutes in his last game against Ukraine, which Poland lost 2-0.
Poland’s coach Jan Urban has indicated he will make several changes to the starting lineup. He mentioned that Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara will take over from Marcin Bułka in goal. Piotr Zieliński is also likely to start.
Urban said, “Expect numerous changes. There were many in the first match, and there will be many in the second. These are friendly matches, so when, if not now, should we try different things and give the players a chance?
“We made nine changes during the match against Ukraine. I watched other teams in friendly matches; they made 10 or 11 changes. That’s normal in such matches.”
The match at the 58,000-capacity Stadion PGE Narodowy will be the second time these two countries meet at the senior level.
The last encounter was in March 2018, during preparations for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria won that match 1-0, with Victor Moses scoring the only goal at Stadion Miejski we Wrocławiu.
Lewandowski will be looking to lead his team to victory and avoid another defeat at home as Poland gears up for future international matches.
