Former Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski is getting ready to join Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer.

A report from the BBC says the 37-year-old Polish player left Barcelona at the end of last season when his contract ended. He is set to sign a two-year deal with Chicago Fire.

Last December, Chicago Fire mentioned they had talks with Lewandowski about a possible transfer.

He has been on their discovery list. This means other MLS teams cannot sign him without paying a fee to Chicago Fire. There has been ongoing conversation between the two sides.

Besides Chicago Fire, AC Milan and teams in the Saudi Pro League also showed interest in Poland’s top scorer. He is expected to be one of the highest-paid players in the MLS.

His signing would be a big deal for Chicago. The city has one of the largest Polish communities outside Poland.

Chicago Fire is currently third in the MLS Eastern Conference. They made their first playoff appearance last season. They will return to play after the World Cup break on Friday, July 17 against Vancouver.

Lewandowski played 12 seasons in Germany’s Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. He won 10 league titles and helped Bayern win the Champions League in 2020.

He was the favorite to win the 2020 Ballon d’Or, but the award was not given that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, he finished second in the Ballon d’Or voting. He won the Best FIFA Men’s Player Award in 2020 and 2021.

After joining Barcelona in 2022, he helped the club win three La Liga titles and the 2025 Copa del Rey, scoring 120 goals in 193 games.

But injuries over the past year limited him to just 17 league games last season.
