List of Players Who Scored Hat-Tricks But Lost EPL Matches

Brian Brobbey has entered a small group in Premier League history after scoring a hat-trick for Sunderland in their 5-3 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Dutch striker scored three goals as Sunderland fought hard against Pep Guardiola's team. But Erling Haaland’s late goal secured all three points for Manchester City.

An Opta Analyst reported on Sunday and a BBC report on Monday confirmed that Brobbey’s treble was the sixth time in Premier League history that a player scored a hat-trick and still lost the match.

He is now the fifth different player to achieve this. Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier did it twice during his career.

Brobbey scored in the 12th, 33rd, and 59th minutes. City had goals from Enzo Fernandez, Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo’s two goals, and Haaland in this thrilling eight-goal match.

The last time this happened was in December 2007. This means Brobbey is the first player in 19 years to score a Premier League hat-trick and still finish on the losing side.

1. Matt Le Tissier, Oldham Athletic 4-3 Southampton

May 8, 1993

Le Tissier became the first player to score a Premier League hat-trick in a losing match in the league’s first season. He scored three times for Southampton against Oldham Athletic, but his goals were not enough, as Oldham won 4-3.

2. Matt Le Tissier, Southampton 3-4 Nottingham Forest

August 19, 1995

Two years later, Le Tissier found himself in the same situation again. He scored another hat-trick at home against Nottingham Forest, but Southampton lost 4-3.

This made Le Tissier the only player before Brobbey to score hat-tricks in two separate Premier League losses.

3. Dion Dublin, Sheffield Wednesday 4-3 Coventry City

December 4, 1995

Dion Dublin became the third player to achieve this when he scored three goals for Coventry City against Sheffield Wednesday. Coventry lost 4-3, just months after Le Tissier scored his second hat-trick in a losing match.

4. Dwight Yorke, Newcastle United 4-3 Aston Villa

September 30, 1996

Less than a year later, Aston Villa's Dwight Yorke joined the list. He scored a hat-trick at Newcastle United, but Villa lost 4-3 in another thrilling match with seven goals.

5. Roque Santa Cruz, Wigan Athletic 5-3 Blackburn Rovers

December 15, 2007

It took over 11 years for this to happen again. Blackburn Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz scored three goals against Wigan Athletic. But his hat-trick was not enough, as Wigan won 5-3.

Santa Cruz remained the last player to score a Premier League hat-trick in a defeat for 19 years.

6. Brian Brobbey, Manchester City 5-3 Sunderland

September 20, 2026

Brobbey ended the long wait at the Etihad Stadium. The Sunderland striker scored three times, bringing his team level twice before completing his hat-trick in the 59th minute to make it 4-3.

Sunderland tried hard for an equaliser, but Haaland settled the game in the 81st minute. Brobbey thus became the sixth player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick in a match his team lost, and the fifth different player to do so.
