Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has spoken out after getting his 50th assist in senior club football. He achieved this in Atlético Madrid's 1-1 draw against VfB Stuttgart in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Lookman came off the bench at half-time with Atlético down 1-0. The goal that put them behind came from Jamie Leweling in the 36th minute. Just a minute into the second half, Lookman assisted Julián Álvarez, who equalised 80 seconds later. Transfermarkt confirms that this assist made it Lookman's 50th in his senior career.
In a chat with the club’s media, Lookman talked about how the team wanted to change the game's direction after a tough first half.
"I think they obviously started very well. A strong team playing away from home is never easy. But we wanted to try to change the tie in the second half, which we did with the goal," he said.
Atlético faced more challenges when Morten Hjulmand was sent off in the 64th minute for a bad tackle on Angelo Stiller. Lookman mentioned that the team worked hard to earn a point despite being one player down.
"We kept pushing, but unfortunately, we went down to 10 men. We dug in, we showed our fight together, stuck together, and we take a point away from home," the former Everton player said.
He also expressed confidence that Álvarez would score from his pass.
"We just tried to look out for him in the box; he is deadly in the box. So, yeah, I knew he would score," Lookman said.
Lookman also took time to thank the fans who traveled to support the team.
"The whole match, we could hear them pushing us throughout the game. Especially after the 65th minute, they kept going, and they were even louder. So, thanks to them, thanks for them for the extra energy," he said.
