Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman made a big impact as Atletico Madrid beat Manchester United 2-0 in their UEFA Champions League match on Tuesday.
Lookman came on in the 71st minute. He worked well with Jonathan David, another substitute, to set up Atletico’s second goal in the 79th minute at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid.
This goal happened just six minutes after Manchester United defender Leny Yoro was sent off. A VAR review showed that Yoro denied David a clear chance to score.
David finished Lookman’s pass to give Atletico a solid lead and secure the win for them.
Atletico took the lead very early in the match. Pablo Barrios scored in the first minute after Manchester United made a defensive mistake.
Manchester United had their chances to get back into the game. Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford both created good opportunities but could not score.
Atletico also had a second goal canceled by VAR before half-time. Johnny Cardoso scored in the 44th minute, but his goal was ruled out after a handball by Marcos Llorente was spotted in the build-up.
Lookman came on as part of a strategy by Atletico manager Diego Simeone. He brought on Lookman and Hjulmand in the 71st minute to help keep their lead.
This win marked Atletico’s second match in the Champions League group stage. Meanwhile, Manchester United had to deal with the loss and Yoro’s red card.
Atletico had lost their first Champions League match 2-1 against Liverpool. On the other hand, Manchester United started their campaign with a 4-0 win over Sabah FK.
