Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has praised Ademola Lookman as a key player. This comes after the Super Eagles forward broke a six-game goal drought during the 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
Lookman came off the bench in the second half and scored in the 79th minute at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. He reacted quickly and scored from a rebound after United goalkeeper Senne Lammens saved a shot from Jonathan David.
Before the match against United, the 28-year-old had only scored once this season in all competitions. This goal was also his 100th senior club goal, as noted by Transfermarkt.
After the match, Simeone spoke highly of Lookman's performance and his stats. He mentioned Lookman's ability to take on defenders and make an impact.
"He is a very important player; he has very good stats, he scores goals, he is good in one-on-one situations," the Argentine coach said.
Simeone also pointed out that Lookman is still working to show his full potential. He noted that Lookman has gotten his scoring touch back.
"He is not at that point where that comes through, but he has rediscovered his scoring touch. He had the instinct to follow up the play and the rebound worked in his favour. We got the win we needed," he added.
Atletico Madrid took the lead just one minute into the game with a goal from Pablo Barrios. The win was secured after United’s Leny Yoro received a red card in the 74th minute for a foul on David as the last man.
This win marked Atletico's fifth straight victory, while Manchester United has now gone five games without a win.
