A man named Saheed Babalola has been arrested by the Nigeria Police in connection with digging up a corpse and cutting off its head and wrist. This happened in Feesu community, close to Iwo in Osun State.
The deceased was an 18-year-old girl who lived in the same compound as Babalola. She died under suspicious circumstances on Sunday and was buried that same day at their home.
Babalola reportedly participated in the burial of the girl. But in the early hours of Monday, he allegedly returned to the grave site with two others, whose names are not known yet. They exhumed the corpse and cut off its head and wrist.
Residents heard strange noises coming from the burial site and went to check what was happening. They caught Babalola in the act, but his accomplices managed to escape.
A Feesu resident, who asked to remain anonymous, shared details in a phone call on Wednesday. He said, "Three people came to do this, but we caught one and gave him to the police."
Abiodun Ojelabi, the Police Public Relations Officer for Osun State, confirmed the incident in a phone interview on Wednesday. He mentioned that Babalola is helping with the investigation.
Ojelabi said both Babalola and the deceased lived in Olomo Compound, Feesu, Iwo. He added, "Police officers went to the scene, and we arrested Saheed Babalola. This incident happened on October 12. The girl was buried on the 11th. Neighbors heard a strange noise and found Saheed where they buried her."
"He was arrested by police in Iwo Division but has now been moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department. The State CID continued the investigation and found where he hid the head and wrist of the victim. We recovered the head and the hand. Investigations are still ongoing. Both the suspect and the deceased lived at the same address in Olomo Compound, Feesu, in Iwo," the PPRO said.
This incident comes at a time when there are similar reports of alleged ritual-related crimes in the area.
