Portugal manager Roberto Martínez has shared that Cristiano Ronaldo's early exit against Nigeria was part of a planned move, not because of his missed chances in Tuesday night’s 2-1 win.
Portugal won the match at the Dr. Magalhães Pessoa Stadium in Leiria, but it was not an easy game. Pedro Neto gave Portugal an early lead, but Akor Adams equalized for Nigeria after a defensive mistake. Francisco Conceição scored again after the break to put Portugal in front, ensuring Martínez's team started their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey with a win.
One of the biggest topics from the match was Ronaldo. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner played his first senior match against Nigeria but had a tough time despite getting into good positions. The 41-year-old had several chances but could not score before being taken off shortly after the 60-minute mark.
Many fans thought the substitution was a tactical decision due to his misses. But Martínez said that wasn’t true. He explained that Ronaldo’s substitution was planned ahead of time as part of Portugal’s World Cup preparations.
“Diogo Costa had the 90-minute plan, Cristiano of 60 minutes,” Martínez said after the game, according to Portuguese news outlet O Jogo. “Nuno Mendes was going to have 30 and 45 for Vitinha and João Neves. I am very pleased with the attitude and focus of all the players.
“Being able to get the idea of messing with the team and showing a synchronization is a source of pride.”
This explanation highlighted Portugal’s larger goal for the match. While winning was important, the game was also a chance to manage players’ workloads, test combinations, and adjust tactical details before the World Cup.
For much of the first half, Nigeria matched Portugal's energy and structure. Eric Chelle’s team threatened on counterattacks, often using quick plays to challenge the Portuguese defense. Martínez recognized this challenge and praised the Super Eagles for their physical strength and ability to create chances without needing to hold the ball for long.
But he felt the game changed a lot after halftime. “I think today we had an opponent with players who had a lot of physical capacity and use the attacking movements very well, without needing much combination to get to the area,” Martínez said.
“It’s a strong aspect that Congo has, too. It was a tough game, we created opportunities, we improved in the second half, which is very important to me. Nigeria had a good game in the first half, but in the second did not have a shot on goal. Our game had intensity without a ball and always gain help in confidence.
“But the most important thing is to have the team ready.”
His comments matched how the game played out. Nigeria stayed competitive before halftime and deserved their equalizer through Adams. But Portugal tightened control in the second half, limiting Nigeria's scoring chances while creating enough opportunities to win.
Beyond just winning, Martínez feels Portugal is ready for the World Cup. The former Everton manager said recent training helped players recover and learn new tactics. He also believes the team now has the balance and confidence to go far in the tournament.
“We worked on different ideas, and now we are more complete in all aspects of the three World Cup matches,” he said. “On an individual level, the players had a period of rest, and with today’s game, everyone is now prepared with a high level of intensity and a lot of confidence. The national team is ready for the World Cup.”
This confidence will be put to the test quickly, as Portugal will face Colombia, DR Congo, and Uzbekistan in Group K, starting against DR Congo on June 17. For Martínez, the win over Nigeria may not have been perfect, but it provided exactly what he needed: important playing time for key players, tactical adjustments, and proof that Portugal is going into the World Cup with momentum.
For Nigeria, the loss was another sign that they can hold their own against top teams. For Portugal, it confirmed that the countdown to the World Cup is finished.
