New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday recognized the Nigerian community for shaping the culture and economy of the city’s five boroughs.
He made this statement as Nigerian New Yorkers celebrated their heritage during the 34th anniversary of the Nigerian Day Parade.
Mr Mamdani took part in the festivities.
In a post on X, Mr Mamdani said the parade was a chance to honor the Nigerian community and its role in New York.
He pointed out the important role of Nigerian entrepreneurs and their businesses.
He said these groups have strengthened neighborhoods and highlighted the influence of Nigerian music and culture.
He mentioned how popular Afrobeats is at graduation parties in some areas and the presence of the Agbe drum tradition in Brooklyn.
“New York City, wetin dey sup?” he shared, adding, “It was a joy to commemorate 34 years of the Nigerian Day Parade alongside the many Nigerian New Yorkers who fill our city with life.”
“From the entrepreneurs whose businesses strengthen our neighborhoods, to the sounds of Afrobeats pouring out of graduation parties in Southeast Queens, and the aroma of Agege bread calling out to passersby in Brooklyn, the impact of Nigerian New Yorkers is felt across the five boroughs.
“Our city is richer in culture, stronger in community, and more vibrant because of your contributions,” he noted.
The Nigerian Day Parade on Sunday showcased colorful displays of traditional identity, with many Nigerians dressed in cultural outfits and waving the Nigerian flag.
Photos from the event showed large crowds enjoying the celebrations. Traditional food and cultural symbols were a big part of the activities.
There was also music, dancing, and cultural performances.
Mr Mamdani said the Nigerian community has made New York “richer in culture, stronger in community, and more vibrant” through its contributions.
This parade is an annual event for Nigerian New Yorkers to celebrate their heritage and display the country’s culture, traditions, and growing influence in one of the world’s most diverse cities.
