Moffi starts training with Hamburg as club praises Nigerian star

Terem Moffi has started training with his new teammates at Hamburg. He just completed his permanent move from the French club Nice. Kathleen Krüger, a member of Hamburg's sporting board, said Moffi is an “excellent fit” for the team.

Moffi made the move to Hamburg from Nice on Monday. He has been given the No. 9 shirt for the upcoming season.

Krüger mentioned that Moffi’s addition would boost Hamburg’s attack. She believes he will also help the club's younger players with his experience.

“Terem is an excellent fit to our approach. His signing gives us greater depth and variability at centre forward and increases our quality. His career brings great experience at international level and can pass that on to our young players,” Krüger said.

Moffi, who was on loan at Porto last season, talked about how his father's excitement about Hamburg's interest pushed him to join the club.

“Even though HSV spent a few years in the second division, the club is still a big name, and that is the case all over the world,” Moffi said.

“When I told my father about the club’s interest, he immediately knew which club I was talking about and was really excited. For me, that was crazy in a positive way.

“That makes me even happier to now be part of the club and its history myself.”

Moffi joined Nice in January 2023. He scored 24 goals in 72 games for the French team. He also netted twice in 15 competitive matches while on loan at Porto last season.

The striker brings a lot of European and international experience to Hamburg. He played in seven Europa League games for Nice and Porto last season. He even scored in Porto’s 4-1 aggregate win over VfB Stuttgart in the last 16.

Moffi was not available for Hamburg’s DFB-Pokal first-round match against Verl on Monday. Hamburg won that game 3-0. He hopes to make his debut when the team starts their Bundesliga season against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

His move from Nice comes after a tough time at the club. Moffi was one of the players targeted by fans after Nice's team bus was attacked following a loss to Lorient in November 2025.
