Morocco has passed Nigeria to become the highest-scoring African nation in World Cup history. They also set a new record for the most victories by an African team in the tournament. This happened after Morocco beat Haiti 4-2 in an exciting Group C match in Atlanta. This win secured their spot in the round of 32 for the 2026 World Cup.
The four goals against Haiti brought Morocco’s total World Cup goals to 26. This puts them ahead of Nigeria's total of 23 goals. The win also marked Morocco’s seventh victory in the tournament, breaking the previous record of six wins held by the Super Eagles.
Morocco ended up second in Group C with seven points. They were tied with Brazil, who finished first, but Brazil had a better goal difference. Morocco will now head to Monterrey for their Round of 32 match on June 29.
The game in Atlanta was one of the most exciting matches of the tournament so far. Haiti shocked everyone by scoring first with a deflected shot from Lenny Joseph in the 10th minute. Morocco's captain Achraf Hakimi equalized in the 39th minute. Wilson Isidor then put Haiti back in the lead with a fantastic long-range goal. Ismael Saibari brought Morocco back to level terms just before halftime. Substitute Soufiane Rahimi scored to give Morocco the lead in the 78th minute. He then assisted another substitute, Gessime Yassine, who scored to secure the win in the 89th minute.
Morocco had already made history at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by being the first African team to reach the semi-finals. They keep adding to their achievements at this tournament.
With this win against Haiti, Morocco became the first Arab nation to score four goals in a single World Cup match. They also became the first Arab nation to qualify for the knockout stages of the expanded 2026 tournament.
South Africa is the only other African team that has confirmed their place in the Round of 32. Bafana Bafana made it to the knockout rounds for the first time in their history after winning 1-0 against South Korea. Other teams like Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Algeria, and Cape Verde are still fighting for their chances as the group stage reaches its final matches.
