Mr P says P-Square’s 2021 reunion was not real, shares new details on family issues

Peter “Mr P” Okoye, one half of the former music group P-Square, has started talking about the family fights that have torn apart one of Africa’s top music groups.

In a series of videos shared on his social media from Thursday, the singer claimed that the much-celebrated 2021 reunion of P-Square was never meant to bring the group back. He also talked about money disputes involving his twin brother, Paul “Rudeboy” Okoye, and their older brother and former manager, Jude Okoye.

These claims came just days after a new exchange on social media between the brothers sparked more interest in their ongoing feud.

P-Square was formed in 1999 by twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, with their elder brother Jude managing them. They became one of Africa’s biggest music acts with hits like “Bizzy Body”, “Do Me”, “Personally”, “No One Like You” and “Chop My Money.”

The group first broke up publicly in 2017 after years of fights over management, money, and creative control. Although they got back together in November 2021 and performed again, their relationship fell apart again in 2024. Rudeboy later confirmed in an interview that P-Square was no more.

In the first video of the series, the 44-year-old singer said that their widely publicized reunion in 2021 gave the wrong idea. He said the reunion was only about fixing their relationship as brothers, not about bringing P-Square back as a group. Mr P explained that on the day of the reunion, he had no plans to return to the P-Square business. He preferred that both brothers continue their solo careers while helping each other with their music.

In the second video, Mr P claimed that after the reunion, Rudeboy and Jude asked him to sign papers to restart P-Square under a new bank account. He said he refused to keep the family bond strong instead of going back to a business deal that might cause old issues to come up again. Mr P also claimed that before the reunion, Rudeboy and Jude had a disagreement over a ₦90 million loan, with Rudeboy promising to keep him updated about discussions happening without him.

Mr P further claimed that after the reunion, some buyers offered billions of naira for the P-Square music catalogue. However, he said the deal fell through after problems were found in the backend records provided during the checks. Neither Rudeboy nor Jude has publicly replied to the latest claims.

These new claims followed another public exchange between the brothers earlier this week. On Monday, Mr P apologized for his comments about local languages after facing criticism online. Shortly after that, Rudeboy posted something many social media users saw as a hidden attack on his twin brother. Mr P’s recent video series seems to be a response to that.

The renewed family fight comes against the backdrop of a criminal case involving Jude Okoye. Earlier this year, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) took Jude to the Federal High Court in Lagos over claims involving about ₦1.38 billion, one million US dollars, and £34,537.59 in money laundering.

Jude pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail later. During the trial, Mr P testified for the prosecution while Rudeboy defended their elder brother, showing more divisions in the family. Mr P said this series is not over, promising to keep sharing what he calls the true story behind the end of P-Square and the events that hurt their family relationship.
