Nasarawa Fire Service handles over 80 emergency calls in 2026

The Nasarawa State Command of the Federal Fire Service has reported that it responded to over 80 emergency calls. These calls included fire incidents and rescue operations across Nasarawa State from January to September 2026. The service saved lives and property in the process.

Eno Nwachukwu, the Controller of the Federal Fire Service in Nasarawa, shared this information during a fire service awareness campaign for the Ember months. This campaign happened on Friday in Lafia, the state capital.

The theme of the Ember months fire safety campaign was, “Fire Safety, Emergency Evacuation And Practical First Aid Fire Fighting Drill.” Nwachukwu noted that the command had great success in handling fire calls, saving many lives and protecting property worth millions of naira.

“Since the beginning of this year, we have received more than 80 to 100 fire calls. I want to thank God that there was no fire call that we couldn’t tackle within the period under review.

“If you call us on time, just count it that it is done. No building was engulfed with fire. We were able to salvage all the situations,” she said.

Importance of Awareness Campaign

Nwachukwu spoke about the importance of the awareness campaign for the Ember months. She said the service aims to guide the public on how to prevent fire outbreaks. It also teaches people how to handle fire incidents while waiting for firefighters to arrive.

“It is in this Ember month that there are always incidents here and there. Fire outbreaks in particular, maybe you are leaving your house, you don’t turn off all electrical appliances, or you overload your sockets. So we are trying to avoid all those kinds of issues during this season,” she explained.

During the event, the Zonal Controller for Zone P, which includes Nasarawa and Plateau states, Controller Hadiza Saliu, spoke about working with other security agencies. She said they collaborate to respond to emergencies effectively.

“We collaborate with our sister agencies a lot on sensitising the public. We also try to enforce compliance with fire standards. When it comes to responding to incidents, we have a joint effort to attend to them.”

Saliu added, “We have a lot of collaboration, even before emergencies occur. Our focus is now on prevention. We do not want emergencies to happen at all, not to talk of attending to incidents.”

Participants in the Campaign

Our correspondent reports that people who joined the sensitisation campaign included members from other security agencies, civil servants, traditional rulers, and the general public.

A highlight of the event was a demonstration of fire drills. Participants learned how to combat different types of fires using fire extinguishers and fire blankets.
