Borno South Senator Ali Ndume has called on President Bola Tinubu to keep the military offensive going against terrorists and bandits. He believes that with a united national effort, these criminals can be defeated.
Senator Ndume, who is part of the All Progressives Congress (APC), shared this after meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.
He mentioned that ongoing military actions are putting pressure on criminal groups. He noted that many bandit leaders have been taken down and some commanders have surrendered.
"There has been a lot of pressure recently on bandits in the North-west, the North-east, and elsewhere. Some of their leaders have been taken out, and some of their commanders surrendered on Wednesday," he said.
"If this momentum is sustained, we are confident the problem will eventually end," he added.
Senator Ndume stated that terrorists cannot stand up to strong military action. He emphasized that commitment is essential to defeating them.
"You don’t spare a bandit or a terrorist. Once you identify a terrorist, you should deal with him because if you don’t kill him, he will kill you," he said.
The senator praised President Tinubu for focusing on security by regularly meeting with the nation’s security leaders. He also encouraged the president to keep Nigerians informed about government policies and national issues.
"People expect their leader to tell them what is going on instead of allowing others to speak on his behalf," he said.
Senator Ndume also called on the government to tackle the rising costs of food, transport, and other economic challenges facing citizens.
"We have the capacity to handle these problems. What is needed is coordination," he stated.
He explained that his talks with the president covered insecurity, economic hardship, and other urgent national matters. He revealed that Mr. Tinubu suggested regular meetings to share ideas on solving Nigeria’s challenges.
Senator Ndume described insecurity as the biggest issue for the country. He pointed out that the situation is improving in some areas.
He applauded the president, the armed forces, and other security agencies for their continued efforts against criminal elements nationwide.
Senator Ndume added that Mr. Tinubu's meeting with the service chiefs before their discussion showed the administration's commitment to restoring peace and security.
