New Coach for Super Falcons to be Announced Today

The Nigeria Football Federation will name the new head coach of the Super Falcons in Abuja today. This comes as preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games are set to start, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

A source from the National Sports Commission told PUNCH Sports Extra that the announcement of the new head coach is urgent because Nigeria has an Olympic qualifier coming up.

"You know we have an important Olympic qualifier, so we need a new coach, who will be announced any moment now," the NSC source said.

Another official from the NFF confirmed that the appointment is happening but was unsure about a formal unveiling.

"The NSC is in charge, and I am not sure if there will be an unveiling, but an announcement is imminent," said the NFF source.

Though the name of the new coach has not been revealed, it is clear that all steps in the selection process are done. This follows the firing of coach Justine Madugu and his team after the 2026 WAFCON.

PUNCH reported that former Super Falcons coach Thomas Dennerby might return, along with 2016 WAFCON-winning coach Florence Omagbemi. Other reports suggest that American coach Randy Waldrum is also in the mix, and Imama Amapakabo has shown interest in the position.

This appointment comes after the Falcons' poor showing at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The team was knocked out in the quarter-finals, losing 1-0 to Cameroon. This loss ended their chances of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

After this setback, Justin Madugu was removed from his role as head coach. This led the NFF and Sports Commission to start looking for a new coach to lead the team into a fresh phase.

The new coach will be expected to rebuild the squad and prepare Nigeria for the 2028 Olympic Games. The goal is also to restore the Falcons’ reputation as one of Africa’s top women’s national teams.

This appointment is especially important because Nigeria has not participated in the Olympic women’s football tournament for a long time. The Falcons last played at the Games in 2008 in Beijing.

The NFF and NSC hope the new coach can bring stability and direction to the team as they move forward. The identity of the new coach will be officially announced in Abuja today.
