Niger State Reports 124 Diphtheria Cases, 17 Deaths

The Niger State Government has reported 17 deaths from diphtheria among 124 cases in three local government areas over the past seven months.

The Health Commissioner, Murtala Bagana, shared this information on Friday. He spoke at the Second Quarter Press Parley held by the state Ministry of Information and Orientation in Minna.

Mr Bagana noted that 103 patients have been treated and sent home. The deaths occurred in Bida, Suleja, and Shiroro local government areas.

He also mentioned that three new cases were found recently, and one patient is still receiving treatment.

Government's Response

The commissioner said the government is working to improve disease monitoring, case management, vaccinations, and public awareness to stop the spread of diphtheria.

He encouraged parents and caregivers to make sure their children get all the necessary vaccines. He emphasized that regular immunisation is key to preventing diphtheria, measles, and other diseases that can be avoided through vaccines.
