Nigeria has secured the chance to host the 2028 ITTF Africa Championships. This decision came after Nigeria won a vote against Tunisia at the ITTF Africa meeting held in Tangier, Morocco.
The Africa Championships is the top table tennis tournament in Africa. Both Nigeria and Tunisia wanted to host this tournament. To resolve the issue, delegates voted since the hosts for the other events in 2027 and 2028 were already announced. A total of 31 delegates were present, while seven voted by proxy.
Out of the 38 certified voters, Nigeria received 23 votes. Tunisia got 15 votes.
Adesoji Tayo, the President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, expressed gratitude for the support shown to Nigeria. He promised that Lagos would host a world-class event.
"We want to thank all the delegates for putting their trust in Nigeria to host a befitting tournament in 2028 as well as the African Para Championships in 2027. As experienced organisers of major table tennis tournaments in the world, we are poised to deliver a seamless event that continues to attract more people to Nigeria."
Tayo added, "The city of Lagos will again witness the best of table tennis, and we assure all our visitors that Nigeria will be the place to be in 2028."
Nigeria will also take charge of the Para event in 2027. Libya will host the Cup, while Algeria will manage the Championships and Botswana will take care of the Youth event in 2027.
In 2028, Rwanda will host the Youth event and Egypt will manage the Para event. The host for the Cup event is still to be announced.
