The Nigeria Boxing Federation is counting on a fresh crop of fighters to shine at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This comes after Nigerian boxers have gained global attention, breaking into the World Boxing Council rankings in various weight classes.
NBF Vice President Omonlei Imadu expressed optimism about having four Nigerian women ranked in the WBC top 10 in their categories. He sees this as a clear sign that the country’s strategy for developing boxing talent is beginning to show results at a high level.
Elizabeth Oshoba leads the Nigerian team in the rankings, sitting fourth in the featherweight division. She has an unbeaten professional record and has already won a world title.
Toyin Adejumola is ranked 10th in the middleweight division. Celina Agwu and Bolatito Oluwole are also making their mark in the heavyweight top 10. This shows that Nigeria is building a strong base in women’s boxing.
Imadu noted that these rankings highlight the success of moving boxers from local competitions to the international stage. He praised the federation’s long-term focus on athlete development.
“The next generation of boxers is also giving us confidence for the Commonwealth Games,” Imadu said.
“These seniors’ preparation in Olympic-style boxing prepared them for these performances after also participating in festivals and Games.”
He mentioned that the same system is now producing younger fighters who are quickly adjusting to top-level competition. Several of them are already ready to compete professionally.
“So for the new boxers, they have also gone through these pathways, and I have full confidence they will make Nigeria proud and will fly our flag high. They are even ready for the pros already,” he added.
Nigeria’s increasing presence in the WBC rankings comes at an important time. The federation is ramping up its preparations for Glasgow, where boxing is expected to be one of Nigeria’s best chances for medals.
The momentum is also built on Nigeria’s success at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where the country won four medals in boxing. Officials believe that the current wave of ranked fighters shows a real improvement in potential.
With the Commonwealth Games coming up, the NBF is hopeful that the mix of experienced boxers and rising stars will turn global rankings into medal wins at this major event.
