Kayinsola Ajayi and Samuel Ogazi made history at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Both athletes won national titles and set new records, showcasing one of the best performances by Nigerians in recent years.

Ajayi took first place in the men’s 100 metres, while Ogazi defended his NCAA 400m title with an impressive run. He produced one of the fastest quarter-mile performances ever seen.

This duo led a strong Nigerian showing at the championships. Israel Okon won silver in the men’s 200m, and Vincent Ugwoke secured bronze in the discus throw.

Ogazi Makes History

Ogazi had a standout performance, running 43.38 seconds to win the men’s 400m title. The University of Alabama star smashed his personal best, set a new Nigerian record, and broke the NCAA record. He now ranks fourth on the all-time world list.

His time is also the fastest in the world this year. Ogazi's achievement breaks the previous Nigerian record and strengthens his status as one of the top talents in global athletics.

At just 20 years old, he became the fastest man in NCAA history for this distance while defending the title he won last year. His recent successes continue a fantastic journey since his breakthrough performance at the Paris Olympics.

Ajayi Shines in Sprinting

In the men’s 100m final, Ajayi proved he is Nigeria’s fastest man with a decisive victory in 9.72 seconds. This time was aided by a wind reading of 2.2 metres per second, just over the legal limit. His performance shows the amazing form that has made the Auburn University athlete one of the world’s top sprinters.

Earlier this season, Ajayi made history by running a legal time of 9.84 seconds, breaking Olusoji Fasuba’s long-standing Nigerian record of 9.85 seconds. His win in Eugene makes him only the second Nigerian man to win the NCAA 100m title, after Divine Oduduru did it in 2019.

This victory marks another milestone in what has been a breakthrough season for Ajayi.

Okon Fights Through Injury

Israel Okon showed great determination by winning a silver medal in the men’s 200m, even while dealing with an injury. During the earlier 100m event, Okon seemed to suffer from cramp and was not at his best for the 200m final.

He struggled during the race but still finished in second place with a time of 19.99 seconds, earning a well-deserved spot on the podium. Despite not competing as planned, the silver medal capped an impressive NCAA run for one of Nigeria’s promising young sprinters.

Ugwoke Wins Bronze in Discus

In the field events, Vincent Ugwoke achieved a personal best throw of 63.89 metres to win bronze in the men’s discus. He made his best effort in the fourth round, earning his first NCAA Championships podium finish.

Ajayi, Ogazi, Okon, and Ugwoke’s performances provide a major boost for Nigerian athletics. This comes as the national trials and preparations for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow approach.

With stars like world record holder Tobi Amusan leading the charge and new talents showing world-class skills on the college circuit, Nigerian athletics seems set for success on the international stage in the coming months.
