Team Nigeria kept shining at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Monday. Weightlifter Onome Omolola Didih won the country’s fifth gold medal with an amazing performance in the women’s 53kg event.
Didih showed her strength throughout the competition, breaking records on her way to victory. She set three Commonwealth Games records as she stood on top of the podium.
She started with a lift of 93kg in the snatch. This was a new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth record. Then she followed with 113kg in the clean and jerk, which was another record. She finished with a total lift of 206kg, also a new Games and Commonwealth record.
Didih won easily against India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav, who took silver with a total of 199kg. Canada’s Rebeka Groulx got the bronze medal with a lift of 178kg.
Didih’s win came just hours after Edidiong Umoafia secured Nigeria’s fourth gold medal in the men’s 71kg weightlifting event. Umoafia lifted a total of 319kg, which included 147kg in the snatch and 172kg in the clean and jerk. He finished ahead of Samoa’s Joseph Tafi and Nauru’s Elgin Moses.
Nigeria kicked off its gold medal wins with para powerlifting. Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and Riluwan Idris all claimed titles on the first days of the Games. The country also earned silver medals through Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema, Rita Ferdinand, and weightlifter Ruth Asuquo Nyong.
With athletics and more weightlifting events still happening today, Nigeria is looking to keep up its impressive performance and gain more medals in Glasgow.
