Barcelona's Lamine Yamal has said that no player was better than Lionel Messi at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He also thanked the Argentine star for calling him and offering support after a tough night.
Yamal shared his thoughts in separate posts on Facebook on Tuesday. He showed deep respect for Messi’s performance in the World Cup and also valued Messi’s personal support.
“No player was better than Messi in the 2026 FIFA World Cup!” the Spain international posted.
In another message, Yamal thanked the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner for reaching out and encouraging him.
“A big thank you to Leo Messi. Goat!
“Thank you for calling me, checking on me, and giving me your support. Your words meant a lot to me, especially after a difficult night.
“I truly appreciate it, Leo. Much love and respect!,” he wrote.
Yamal’s statements came after he placed third in the 2026 Ballon d’Or rankings. He finished behind winner Harry Kane and runner-up Kylian Mbappe during the ceremony in London on Monday.
The Barcelona teenager mentioned a “difficult night” during the Ballon d’Or event. He did not say directly that the award results led to Messi’s call.
Our reporter noted on Tuesday night that Yamal has been posting a lot of praise for Messi since Monday's Ballon d’Or ceremony.
The Barcelona forward also praised the Argentine, who has recently retired from international football, after Argentina came second to Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
