Nigeria's amazing run at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow continued on Wednesday. Goodness Nwachukwu won the country's seventh gold medal with a new world record in the women’s para discus F42-44/61-64 event.
Nwachukwu threw 39.66 metres to grab the gold medal. This new world record boosts Nigeria's standing in para sports.
This latest achievement adds to Team Nigeria’s impressive performance. The team has already recorded many successes in para powerlifting, weightlifting, and athletics.
Nwachukwu's win is also a successful title defence. She first shone at the Commonwealth stage during the Birmingham 2022 Games. There, she broke her own world record twice to win gold in the same event.
Nwachukwu’s victory brings Nigeria's gold medal count to seven. This is one of the country's best outings at the Commonwealth Games in recent years.
Earlier in the Games, Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and Riluwan Idris won gold medals in para powerlifting. In the weightlifting events, Edidiong Umoafia, Onome Didih, and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal also made waves with several Commonwealth Games records.
Nigeria also had success in athletics. Kayinsola Ajayi won bronze in the men’s 100 metres. He became the first Nigerian man to win a Commonwealth Games medal in this event since Olusoji Fasuba's silver at Melbourne 2006. Temitope Adeshina also grabbed bronze in the women’s high jump.
With more events to come, Team Nigeria hopes to increase its medal tally as the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games reach their final stages.
