Nwachukwu Celebrates New Commonwealth Gold Record

Goodness Nwachukwu says she feels “on top of the world” after her amazing throw helped her keep her Commonwealth Games discus title in Glasgow. She called this moment one of the best in her career, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

“I feel like I am on top of the world. I feel so great,” the Nigerian para-athlete said after winning. “I was just shouting.” She also thanked her fans back home, saying, “I love you all and I can’t wait to see you. Love you.”

Nwachukwu shared that she almost lost the win after struggling with her first throws, even though her warm-up was great. “I was wondering what was happening because my warm-up was so good,” she said. “My coach kept telling me to calm down, and even one of the athletes from Kenya encouraged me to relax.”

The champion said her coach’s last words before her final throw made a big difference. “Before the last throw, my coach said, ‘Now you can explode. Attack.’ That was when the record came,” she remembered.

Nwachukwu won with an impressive final throw of 39.66m in the women’s F42-44/F61-64 discus event. She broke her own F42 world record by more than three metres, bringing Nigeria its seventh gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. This win also gave the 27-year-old her second straight Commonwealth title after winning in Birmingham in 2022.

Nwachukwu’s record-setting performance showed that she is one of the best para-athletes in the world and added another special moment to Nigeria’s strong showing in Glasgow.
