Brighton hammered 10-man Coventry 5-0 on Sunday. This win pushed Brighton to fourth place in the Premier League. It also left Frank Lampard’s team at the bottom of the table.
Charalampos Kostoulas put Brighton in front during the first half. Malick Yalcouye quickly added another goal right after the break.
Coventry striker Taiwo Awoniyi received a red card for violent conduct in the second half.
Pascal Gross scored from the penalty spot. Lewis Dunk added another with a long-range shot.
Yasin Ayari finished the scoring for Brighton as Coventry fans began leaving the stadium well before the final whistle.
Coventry is still searching for their first Premier League goal since 2001. They have gone scoreless in their first four matches this season.
Lampard’s team is the only one in the Premier League that has not earned a point this season.
The Sky Blues returned to the Premier League after 25 years in the Championship last season.
“It’s a difficult scoreline, and it’s not easy at home,” Lampard said after the match.
“The first half was pretty good; we created some chances and we had them under a lot of pressure. Then a mistake to make it 2-0 and the red card makes it very difficult.
“We have to take responsibility. We did some good stuff, then the game became very, very difficult for us. We have to keep working.”
Brighton moved into the top four after winning for the second time this season. This is their first win since they beat Aston Villa 4-0 on the opening weekend.
“It’s important to stay humble and not take these things for granted,” Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler said.
“Overall we are a team where a lot of players can score goals. That gives us a lot of flexibility, which is good for a coach too.”
Coventry had a good chance early in the game. Jay Dasilva found Jack Rudoni, whose volley forced a great save from Bart Verbruggen.
Verbruggen made another amazing save to stop Frank Onyeka’s volley. Onyeka had flicked the ball up cleverly for his shot.
Brighton took the lead in the 35th minute with a great play from Kostoulas. The young Greek striker headed Gross’s pass past two Coventry defenders. He then drilled a perfect shot past Carl Rushworth.
Yalcouye extended Brighton's lead, breaking away from the defense to score in the 51st minute.
Things got worse for Coventry two minutes later. Awoniyi was sent off after elbowing Maxim De Cuyper in the face.
Brighton continued to punish Coventry, scoring their third goal in the 70th minute. Bobby Thomas fouled Kostoulas, leading to a penalty that Gross easily converted.
Dunk scored the best goal of the day in the 83rd minute. He curled a stunning shot into the top corner from 25 yards out.
Ayari capped off Brighton’s amazing performance in stoppage time. He struck a composed low shot past Rushworth.
