Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing has criticized people chasing social media fame as "Lagos big girls." She says their lifestyles are just a fake image created for online likes.
In a recent post on her Snapchat story, the actress said she does not need social media approval. Instead, she would rather enjoy her money quietly than pretend to be someone she is not.
Blessing made fun of those trying to connect with rich people in Lagos. She pointed out that many who look wealthy online are actually struggling financially in real life.
"Na una want be friends with self-acclaimed Lagos big girls by force; people wey be say na online aesthetic want wound them. The moment you go close, you go too pity them," she wrote in Pidgin English.
Rejecting the pressure to keep up a fancy image, Blessing jokingly called herself a "Yankee broke girl." She said she values her privacy and freedom more than how others see her.
"Me, I be Yankee broke girl, I no kuku identify with anything big girl. Make I sha dey see food chop and ticket money to fly round the world… who get pass me no concern me," she stated.
Even as she downplays her image, Blessing insists she has financial strength. She believes real wealth is not about posting flashy items on social media.
"The pressure to belong to the so-called Lagos big girls can never be for someone like me that likes my space, but when matter of N100m to N200m sup, we go chest am without flinching… 'Cus we no dey post lifestyle; dem go call us broke," she added.
Blessing’s comments come as online scrutiny and public arguments over social media images increase in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
