Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie faced disappointment at Wembley. Her team, Brighton & Hove Albion Women, lost 4-0 to Manchester City in the Women’s FA Cup final on Sunday.
Nnadozie stood out for Brighton, making six saves from the 10 shots she faced. Manchester City celebrated a historic domestic double in front of 43,917 fans.
The Nigerian international was busy during the first half. Brighton pushed forward with chances from Fran Kirby, Kiko Seike, and Maisie Symonds but could not score.
City broke the deadlock in the 38th minute. Jamaican striker Khadija Shaw scored with a header. Skipper Alex Greenwood then made it 2-0 with a low free-kick from 20 yards.
Brighton aimed for their first major trophy in history. They matched the Women’s Super League champions for much of the game.
But after half-time, Nnadozie and her teammates struggled against City’s strong attack. Shaw then assisted Aoba Fujino for the third goal. Dutch forward Vivianne Miedema came off the bench to score the final goal late in the match.
Nnadozie made six saves and had many interventions to keep the score from being worse. Despite her efforts, Brighton could not stop City from winning their fourth Women’s FA Cup title, adding it to the Women’s Super League crown they won earlier this month.
Aside from the final loss, the 25-year-old has impressed this season. She joined Brighton from Paris FC last summer and has been a top performer in the Women’s Super League. Nnadozie earned a spot in the WhoScored.com Team of The Season after keeping six clean sheets in 19 league matches and averaging a rating of 6.87.
Her performances have been key to Brighton’s progress under coach Dario Vidosic. The team climbed into the top half of the table and achieved their longest unbeaten run in over a decade.
