The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd has praised the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for stopping a truck carrying 2,145kg of cannabis in Ondo State.
NNPC Ltd, in a statement by Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Mr Andy Odeh, said the truck does not belong to the company.
A correspondent from PUNCH Online saw the statement on the company’s website. Odeh said early checks showed that the vehicle, with registration number MKA 960 XC, was not part of NNPC Ltd’s official fleet or that of its authorized dealers.
He mentioned that the logo on the truck did not match NNPC Ltd’s current branding. He added that the vehicle was not listed in the company’s asset database.
"NNPC Ltd is also working with the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to get more information and find out how the old branding was used on the vehicle.
"NNPC Ltd takes any unauthorized use of its corporate identity seriously, especially if it is linked to illegal activities," he said.
Odeh noted that the company is dedicated to protecting its brand. He said they want to make sure that their name, trademarks, and other corporate identifiers are not misused.
He added that NNPC Ltd would continue to work with the NDLEA and other security agencies to find out who owns and operates the vehicle.
The spokesman also mentioned that the company supports a full investigation into how its branding ended up on the truck.
He said NNPC Ltd is looking into its brand-protection and asset-monitoring procedures. They will take necessary actions, including legal steps if needed.
Odeh encouraged the public and relevant authorities to check the ownership or connection of vehicles claiming to belong to NNPC Ltd through official channels.
He praised the NDLEA for its hard work and ongoing efforts to fight illegal drug trafficking in Nigeria.
