NUJ Sports Games Start in Lagos

The 2026 Nigeria Union of Journalists, Lagos State Council Media Games kicked off on Monday at Agege Stadium and the NUJ Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja.

This week-long competition runs until October 9. It aims to help journalists relax from the stress of the newsroom. It also encourages fitness, healthy living, and bonding among media workers in Lagos.

Events include five-a-side football for men and women, a 100-metre race, and indoor games like chess, draughts, ayo, scrabble, and table tennis.

Ayo Ojedokun, the Chairman of the Media Games Sports Committee, said the competition gives journalists a rare chance to unwind and connect outside their busy work lives.
"Journalism is a demanding profession, and we believe our colleagues deserve an opportunity to relax, interact and showcase their talents outside the newsroom," Ojedokun said. He added that the games also aim to promote friendship, teamwork, healthy living, and stronger connections among journalists.

Adeleye Ajayi, the NUJ Lagos Council Chairman, called the event a chance for unity and friendly competition.
"The 2026 Media Games is expected to bring together journalists from different chapels and media organisations across Lagos State," Ajayi said.

He added, "We are expecting an exciting week of sporting activities, fellowship, and healthy competition."

Several media organisations are taking part, including Vanguard, The Guardian, Lagos Television, Voice of Nigeria, The Nation, and more. The opening game featured Lagos Information against Voice of Nigeria after a novelty match held for the late Alfred Odifa, former Secretary of the Lagos NUJ Council.
