The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, unveiled the logo for its 2026 Media Games on Thursday. They also held the draws for the five-a-side football competition.
The games will take place from 5 to 9 October 2026 at Agege Mini Stadium and the NUJ Secretariat in Lagos.
Journalists from various NUJ chapels and media organisations across Lagos are expected to join the competition. There will be both indoor and outdoor events.
Indoor events include table tennis, chess, Ayo, draughts, and Ludo. The outdoor events will feature five-a-side football and a 100-metre race.
At the press conference and logo unveiling, NUJ Lagos State Council Chairman, Adeleye Ajayi, said the games aim to give journalists a chance to unwind, interact, and compete outside their daily work.
“As journalists, we spend so much time informing and serving society; this event gives us a chance to relax, connect, compete, and celebrate one another,” he said.
Mr Ajayi mentioned that the event would bring together journalists from different chapels and media organisations for a week of sports and fellowship.
“The 2026 Media Games will bring together journalists from various chapels and media organisations across Lagos State. We are looking forward to an exciting week of sports, fellowship, and healthy competition,” Mr Ajayi added.
Logo Unveiling
Mr Ajayi called the unveiling of the official logo a key point in preparing for the games. He said the design shows the values the organisers want to promote.
“Today’s unveiling of the Media Games logo marks another key point in our preparations. The logo represents unity, professionalism, teamwork, and excellence that the Games aim to promote,” he said.
He thanked sponsors, partners, media organisations, and individuals who have supported the event.
“I sincerely appreciate our sponsors, partners, media organisations, and everyone who has helped make this initiative a success,” he said.
“Once again, I welcome you all and thank you for your support,” Ajayi added.
Ayo Ojedokun, Chairman of the 2026 NUJ Lagos State Council Press Week Committee, said the competition will help journalists relax, interact, and show their sports skills.
“Journalism is a demanding job, and we think our colleagues deserve a chance to unwind, interact, and display their talents outside the newsroom,” he said.
Mr Ojedokun said the games also aim to promote friendship, teamwork, healthy living, and stronger bonds among journalists.
“Beyond the competition, the Games are meant to build friendship, teamwork, healthy living, and stronger ties among journalists in Lagos State,” Ojedokun said.
He mentioned that the logo would give the competition a unique identity and reflect the values behind the event.
“The logo’s unveiling today is significant because it gives the Games a unique identity and symbolises the values we want to promote: unity, teamwork, professionalism, friendship, and healthy competition,” he said.
Mr Ojedokun hopes the Media Games will become a lasting platform for journalists to build both professional and personal relationships.
“We want these Games to be a lasting platform where journalists can create relationships and unforgettable experiences,” he added.
He also thanked sponsors and partners for their support of the event.
“Your contributions have greatly helped make these Games happen. We especially appreciate organisations that have given financial support, products, logistics, and other assistance,” he said.
Mr Ojedokun called for more support from corporate organisations, government agencies, media organisations, and individuals. He assured prospective partners of visibility and recognition during the games.
He urged participating journalists to prepare well and maintain sportsmanship throughout the competition.
“Let us compete fairly, respect one another, and, most importantly, enjoy the spirit of camaraderie that the Games represent,” he said.
