Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has addressed rumors about his future. He says he is committed to Trabzonspor. This comes despite interest from Premier League clubs West Ham United and Fulham, as well as Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

“I have an ongoing contract with Trabzonspor, so I need to go back and continue my path with my club,” the 22-year-old told a Turkish TV channel, as reported by Footy-Africa.

“Yes, that is my club, and I am a contracted player there. Whatever happens from now on happens.”

Nwaiwu’s statement matches Trabzonspor’s firm stance. Fulham made an offer of about €20m for him, but it was quickly turned down. The Turkish club has said they would only consider selling if they receive a bid between €35m and €40m.

With four and a half years left on his contract, Trabzonspor does not need to rush into any negotiations.

Nwaiwu joined Trabzonspor from Austrian club Wolfsberger in January for €5.5m. He quickly showed his worth, making 21 appearances in all competitions. He scored three goals and provided one assist, playing an important role in the club’s Turkish Cup win.

His strong performances earned him a spot in the Super Eagles team, making him one of the fastest-rising Nigerian defenders in Europe. His journey took him from Enyimba in the Nigeria Premier Football League to a significant European club in less than two years.

Nwaiwu prefers staying in Turkey because of the playing time and environment at Trabzonspor. Next season, the club will compete in the UEFA Conference League, which gives them European football without the added pressure that comes with a busy Premier League.

Fulham, for example, already has Joachim Andersen, Jorge Cuenca, Issa Diop, and Calvin Bassey fighting for centre-back spots. This leaves little chance for Nwaiwu to get the regular starts that have helped him build his reputation.
