The Ogun State Government is set to take legal action against a company that allegedly dumped industrial waste at the Sagamu interchange on the Sagamu-Siun-Abeokuta Expressway.
Ola Oresanya, the Commissioner for Environment, announced this after a video of the incident was shared on Facebook by Oluwasina Ogungbade, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.
The two-minute clip shows a Sinotruk truck unloading waste next to the expressway. The driver reportedly got aggressive when he realized he was being filmed.
Ogungbade saw the incident on Monday afternoon while driving back to Abeokuta. He noticed the truck discharging waste around 12.45pm.
"I saw the truck on my way back to Abeokuta about 12.45pm discharging the waste. I asked my driver to stop, and my orderly and I got down to confront them. The men in the vehicle were aggressive, as you could see from the video. I then asked my driver to fetch some policemen who were stationed nearby, but before they returned, the people took off. I informed my colleague, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, and he is already dealing with the matter. I believe they have been able to identify the company," he said.
Oresanya confirmed that the company will face prosecution and penalties according to the state's environmental laws.
"The company will be prosecuted and sanctioned according to the law. The name of the company is boldly written on the truck, and the location is known, so there is no way to escape the consequences of that action," he said.
