Nigeria's rising tennis star Oluwaseun Ogunsakin has won his first Grand Slam match in the main draw. He beat 15th seed Kuan-Shou Chen from Chinese Taipei in a thrilling three-set match at the US Open Junior Tennis Championships.
The 17-year-old player from Aurum Tennis Academy came back strong after losing the first set. He won the match 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, moving on to the next round.
This win marks Ogunsakin's first victory in the main draw of a Grand Slam junior tournament.
His success comes after a great qualifying run in New York. He first defeated Tymon Litwic from Poland 6-3, 6-0. Then he pulled off a big upset against the top seed, Felix Roussel from Canada, winning 6-3, 6-4 to secure his spot in the 64-player main draw.
Ogunsakin achieved another milestone by defeating Chen in a match that needed him to stay calm during the final moments.
This win is part of a quick rise for the Nigerian teen. He is playing in his third Grand Slam junior tournament in a row.
Ogunsakin started his Grand Slam journey at the Roland Garros Junior Championships, where he reached the second round of qualifying. He then made it to the main draw at Wimbledon.
At Wimbledon, he also reached the semi-finals of the boys’ doubles competition, showing his growing skills on the international junior scene.
Now at the US Open, he has made main-draw appearances at both Wimbledon and the US Open, after going through qualifying at Roland Garros.
Next, Ogunsakin will face South Africa’s Connor Doig in the second round of the US Open Junior Championships.
The Nigerian player is also set to play in the doubles event, teaming up with Ntungamili Raguin, the talented young tennis player from Botswana.
