The chairmen and secretaries of six opposition political parties have met with their presidential candidates. This is part of their effort to find a common strategy for the 2027 general elections.
Salihu Lukman, who used to be the National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the All Progressives Congress, shared this news in a statement on Wednesday. He spoke on behalf of the coalition parties and mentioned that discussions are still going on.
The statement said that the consultations included the African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, Nigeria Democratic Congress, Social Democratic Party, Peoples Democratic Party, and Peoples Redemption Party.
Lukman noted that those who were consulted include former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of the APM, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi of the NDC, Prince Adewole Adebayo of the SDP, and former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke of the PRP.
These meetings are aimed at following up on the resolutions from the G-100 Opposition Summit. The summit urged opposition parties to have ongoing talks and work better together to support multiparty democracy and protect the interests of Nigerians.
Although they did not announce a single presidential candidate, the talks show that the opposition parties are trying to find common ground as the elections approach. Lukman said the discussions aim to create a framework for cooperation, identify shared priorities, and outline steps for a common democratic agenda.
"The consultations remain ongoing. Further engagements will build on the G-100 resolutions and the commitment to an opposition that is organized, responsible, and capable of working together in the national interest," he said.
He added that Nigerians would be updated on important decisions and next steps as discussions continue. This effort comes as opposition leaders work to overcome their political differences and create a strong challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress and President Bola Tinubu, who is aiming for re-election in 2027.
The issue of having a single opposition presidential candidate is at the heart of talks about how to defeat the APC. Political stakeholders are divided over choosing a candidate, the platform to use, and how to reach a consensus.
Atiku and Obi, who came second and third in the 2023 presidential election, are still key figures in the opposition. Other presidential hopefuls and party leaders also want to play a role in guiding the coalition's direction.
These recent talks could help address the different interests at play, but it is still unclear how the parties will choose a consensus candidate or if all leaders will agree to support one person.
Lukman said this process is based on the idea that Nigeria's challenges need cooperation across party lines. Political leaders must put the country's future, the welfare of citizens, and electoral integrity above personal party interests.
The coalition plans to keep its discussions going as political parties gear up for the 2027 elections.
