Oshoala believes WAFCON is a trophy worth the battle

Six-time African Women’s Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, has called the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations a trophy worth fighting for. This is true even with the Super Falcons’ strong history, having won a record 10 continental titles, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Oshoala is one of the first players to join Nigeria’s camp in Casablanca. The Super Falcons are getting ready to defend their WAFCON title in Morocco.

The tournament runs from July 25 to August 16. Nigeria aims to keep their title, make it 11 WAFCON crowns, and grab a spot in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Oshoala thinks every tournament should show the growth of women’s football in Africa, both on and off the pitch.

“I am looking forward to Nigeria winning it again. It’s something to always fight for, but I feel like each edition there has to be a form of improvement on and off the pitch,” Oshoala said during a CAF Media Stars Spotlight session.

“I really want to see more fans out there and it was better than the previous ones. I think more promotions for this one will preach more about African women’s football.”

The 31-year-old has won the competition with Nigeria in 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024. She also talked about her journey with the Super Falcons and her time playing abroad.

“It’s been an amazing journey for me personally having to experience all of this and playing in other continents. It’s been pretty impressive and there are always room for improvement,” she said.

The Super Falcons are in Group C with Malawi, Zambia, and Egypt. They will start their campaign against tournament newcomers Malawi in Rabat on Tuesday, July 28.

Besides the continental title, this tournament also helps teams qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The four teams that reach the semi-finals will qualify automatically. The best quarter-finalist will also move on to the inter-confederation play-offs.
