The peace between the US and Iran is now at risk as both countries are trading strikes, raising tensions in the area.
On Wednesday morning, Iran fired missiles at a US base in Kuwait. This attack disrupted operations at Kuwait’s airport. Sadly, it resulted in the death of one Indian citizen and injured around 60 others.
Iran’s strike on Kuwait was a reply to a US missile attack on an Iranian military control station on Qeshm Island, close to the Strait of Hormuz.
The US also targeted a Botswana-flagged oil tanker that was heading to an Iranian port on Kharg Island. Central Command stated that the ship ignored the US blockade of Iranian ports.
Iran then hit the Gulf countries of Kuwait and Bahrain. Iranian officials said the attacks aimed at US air and helicopter bases in the area and the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard mentioned that these retaliatory strikes “should serve as a lesson” against unprovoked attacks on Iran’s facilities.
The US claimed that all Iranian attacks on American forces failed. They said Iranian missiles and drones were either intercepted or did not reach their targets. But this claim contradicts the report from the Kuwaiti government about the damage to its airport.
CENTCOM also reported that it shot down three Iranian attack drones that were launched “towards civilian mariners that were rightfully transiting regional waters.”
This latest round of violence comes three months after the first US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
Even though a ceasefire between the US and Iran has been in place since April 8, attempts to reach a lasting agreement have not succeeded due to disagreements over Iran’s uranium enrichment and the control of the Strait of Hormuz.
Last week, Iran and the US announced a preliminary deal to stop hostilities. However, neither side has officially approved or signed the agreement.
This latest attack also raises concerns that Israel’s growing actions in Lebanon could impact the US-Iran ceasefire.
