The Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to remember the 12 June 1993 election. He wants everyone to work towards making the 2027 elections credible, transparent, and focused on the people.
In a message for Democracy Day shared on his X account on Friday, Mr Obi said that 12 June should be a time for Nigerians to think about the state of democracy and governance in the country.
He encouraged citizens to evaluate if Nigeria's democratic institutions are meeting the standards set by the historic 1993 presidential election.
Mr Obi noted that the yearly commemoration of 12 June is a chance to pose important questions about the electoral process, governance, and the agreement between leaders and citizens.
“Today, we are observing a day that should mean a lot to us as a people who cherish democratic principles.
“Every year on 12 June, the conversation inevitably turns to a critical assessment of the state of the nation,” Mr Obi said.
He raised concerns about whether today's elections in Nigeria are as clear and fair as those of 1993. He also questioned if government institutions are truly working for the people.
Mr Obi called 12 June a strong symbol of both reflection and hope.
He said it marks a tough time in Nigeria’s history but also shows the lasting strength of the people's desire for democracy.
According to him, 12 June is an emotional and structural base of Nigeria’s democratic identity. It represents both the sadness of the annulled 1993 presidential election and the eventual victory of citizens seeking democratic governance.
He mentioned that to really understand the meaning of 12 June, one must appreciate its history, growth, and ongoing importance in Nigeria’s democratic path.
“A New Nigeria of true democracy is possible,” he added.
