The Zamfara State Police say they found more than 30 bodies believed to be those of bandits in farmlands near Bukuyum town. This discovery came after a fight between security forces and armed attackers.
The police reported that the bodies were found after security personnel, along with local security groups, stopped an attack on the town on Wednesday, 28 October.
But the police have not confirmed who the dead are or how many people were actually killed in the fighting.
Yazid Abubakar, the police spokesperson, shared this information in a statement on Saturday.
Mr Abubakar, who is a deputy superintendent of police, said the clash was part of an ongoing effort to remove armed groups from Bukuyum Local Government Area. He mentioned that the attackers tried to enter Bukuyum town but were stopped by security forces after a shootout.
"Following the engagement, more than thirty (30) bodies believed to be those of neutralised bandits were reportedly discovered in surrounding farmlands," he stated.
He added that armed groups in the area usually take away their dead after a battle. "However, the actual number of casualties remains subject to further verification by the authorities," he said.
The police statement did not say if any security personnel or civilians were killed or hurt during the attack. Mr Abubakar confirmed that the attackers were blocked from entering the town.
He also mentioned that ongoing security efforts have forced some bandits to flee Zamfara State, but he did not provide details on where they might have gone.
The police said operations are still active in Bukuyum, working alongside other security agencies and local security groups.
