Police Investigate Attack on PDP and NDC Meetings in Enugu

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Bitrus Giwa, has ordered a probe into the recent gun attack that disrupted meetings of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the state.

The police spokesperson in Enugu, Daniel Ndukwe, shared this information in a statement on Sunday.

Reports say that hoodlums attacked and interrupted meetings of the NDC and later the PDP, which took place in different locations on Saturday, September 12.

According to police, the first incident happened at Ndiuno-Obuoffia Community in Nkanu West Local Government Area. Gunmen disrupted an NDC ward meeting with random gunfire, injuring two people.

The second attack took place at St. Joseph Primary School in Agbani, also within the same local government area. Here, hoodlums damaged canopies and chairs set up for a PDP rally.

PDP and NDC are the main opposition parties in Enugu State, which is currently controlled by the All Progressive Congress.

Superintendent Daniel Ndukwe said in the statement that there was no prior notice for security support. But police operatives were quickly sent to both locations after they received the reports. Their goal was to stop further incidents and find the attackers.

Mr Giwa has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation into both incidents and find those responsible.

The commissioner reminded political party leaders during a recent meeting that all political activities in Enugu State should be peaceful and follow the law.

He pointed out that electoral offences are punishable by law. He also warned political parties, candidates, supporters, and others against violence, intimidation, property damage, or any actions that could disrupt public peace and the election process.

The police chief urged political parties and their leaders to notify the police about their campaigns, meetings, rallies, and other events. This will help the police make proper security arrangements.

He assured everyone that the police would continue to create a safe environment for lawful political activities and take strong action against anyone who breaks the law.
