The police in Enugu State are looking into a social media report that claimed armed herders attacked a school in Ezeagu Local Government Area.
In a statement on Tuesday, the police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, called the report “false and misleading.”
Superintendent Ndukwe said no attack took place in any school in the area or anywhere else in the state.
“On-the-spot security assessments, intelligence gathering, operational actions and discreet investigations immediately launched by the command clearly revealed that no such attack occurred in any school within Ezeagu LGA or elsewhere in Enugu State.”
He added, “The command notes with concern the deliberate fabrication and circulation of such unfounded information, which is capable of inciting fear and creating unnecessary panic.”
Ndukwe explained that the false information is also misleading for many people, including school administrators, teachers, students, pupils, and parents.
The police are working hard to find and punish those responsible for this fake report.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu, Mamman Giwa, has ordered the command’s tactical and intelligence units to step up efforts to catch those behind the false information.
He warned that those who created and spread the fake report would face serious consequences.
Ndukwe also reassured the public that the police are dedicated to protecting lives and property. They aim to keep peace, safety, and order in schools and throughout the state.
“Residents are encouraged to disregard the report and remain calm, law-abiding, and security conscious. Please report any suspicious people, activities, or security concerns to the nearest police station or any security agency,” the spokesman said.
