The police in Cross River State have started looking into the death of a teenager whose beheaded body was found in Yahe River, Yala Local Government Area.
The victim, thought to be around 16 years old, was found dead in the river on Tuesday, 27 October. His head was missing from his body.
Sunday Eitokpah, the police spokesperson in Cross River, shared this information in a statement on Monday in Calabar.
Mr Eitokpah, who is an assistant superintendent of police, said the incident was reported around 5:30 p.m. by Ekurbe Abi, the Officer-in-Charge of Yahe Outstation. This led to the body being recovered from the river.
He mentioned that bloodstains were seen at the scene, raising questions about how the teenager died.
The police took the body for a medical examination and later moved it to the mortuary. They are also working to find out who the deceased is.
Ajo Ordue, the Commissioner of Police in Cross River, has ordered a detailed investigation to ensure that anyone responsible is caught and punished, according to the statement.
Mr Ordue has asked people living in Yahe and nearby areas to report any missing persons who fit the description of the victim. He also wants anyone with helpful information to share it with the police.
He encouraged the public to reach out to the nearest police station or contact the command control room if they can help.
He promised that updates would be shared as the investigation continues.
