PSG Leads Champions League After High-Scoring First Round

Paris Saint-Germain is at the top of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League after Matchday 1. The defending champions are not alone at the top after a thrilling start where 16 out of 36 teams won their matches.

PSG is first due to goal difference after thrashing Slovan Bratislava 6-1. Bayern Munich is in second place with a 5-0 win over Bodø/Glimt, also enjoying a five-goal margin.

Barcelona and Manchester United round out the top four, winning 5-1 against Feyenoord and 4-0 against Sabah respectively.

Surprisingly, 16 teams earned three points in their first games. Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk, Fenerbahce, and PSV Eindhoven are in the middle with one point each, after drawing their matches.

The rest of the 18 teams lost their matches and will look to earn points in Matchday 2.

The first round saw a total of 69 goals in 18 matches. This is an average of 3.83 goals per game. It is tied for the highest-scoring Matchday 1 in Champions League history. The only higher-scoring day was Matchday 3 last season, which had 71 goals.

UEFA confirmed that the 69 goals set a new record for Matchday 1.

The matches took place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, according to PUNCH Online.

PSG had the biggest win, beating Slovan Bratislava 6-1. Ferran Torres scored three goals in the match, helping the French champions start their campaign strongly.

Bayern also made an impact, winning 5-0 against Bodø/Glimt. They are just behind PSG on goal difference, both teams at plus five.

Barcelona sits in third place after beating Feyenoord 5-1. Manchester United is fourth after a 4-0 win against Sabah. These four teams are the only ones that scored at least four goals without conceding.

One of the highlights of Matchday 1 came from Como. The Italian newcomers shocked RB Leipzig with a 4-1 win, placing them fifth in the standings.

Como is now the top team outside the usual European giants, ahead of Sporting CP, Stuttgart, and Manchester City.

UEFA called Como's performance a "masterclass in pace and precision" as Cesc Fàbregas' team made a strong debut on the European stage.

Sporting is in sixth place after beating Galatasaray 3-1, while Stuttgart is seventh with a 3-1 win over Viking. Manchester City is in eighth place after winning 2-0 against Porto.

Aston Villa returned to the Champions League with a 3-2 win over Club Brugge in Belgium. This win puts Villa ninth, tied on three points with Lens and Real Betis, who are also in the top 10.

Lens came from behind to beat Slavia Prague 3-2, scoring the winning goal in stoppage time. Real Betis also won 3-2 against Lille.

Borussia Dortmund is 12th after narrowly defeating Villarreal 3-2. Liverpool is 13th after coming from behind to win 2-1 against Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid is in 14th place after a 2-1 win over Inter Milan. Arsenal is 15th despite their 1-0 victory against Napoli.

AEK Athens rounds out the list of winners in 16th place after a 1-0 win over LASK.

The early table shows how close the competition is. Each of the 16 winning teams has three points, and goal difference is what separates them.

Only two matches ended in a draw. Roma drew 1-1 away against Fenerbahce while PSV Eindhoven had the same score against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Roma is in 17th place, followed by Shakhtar in 18th. Fenerbahce is 19th and PSV is 20th. All four teams have one point, but their goal difference keeps them below the winning teams.

The bottom half of the table consists of the 18 teams that lost. Villarreal is 21st even after scoring twice in their 3-2 loss to Dortmund. Club Brugge, Lille, and Slavia Prague follow closely.

Atletico Madrid and Inter are in 25th and 26th places respectively, followed by LASK and Napoli. Galatasaray is 29th after losing 3-1 to Sporting, with Viking, Porto, and Leipzig also without points.

Feyenoord, Sabah, Slovan Bratislava, and Bodø/Glimt hold the bottom four spots. Bodø/Glimt is last after their 5-0 loss to Bayern, leaving them with a goal difference of minus five.

The table shows how one win doesn't guarantee a top spot in the new 36-team league phase. Arsenal and Real Madrid both won but are outside the top 10 due to narrow margins.

Arsenal's 1-0 win over Napoli puts them 15th. Real Madrid's 2-1 win over Inter keeps them in 14th. Liverpool is 13th after their win, while Manchester City is eighth.

The early standings look unusual, with Como in fifth and AEK Athens 16th among the teams with three points. Many big clubs are already outside the top positions.

The next matchday is set for October 13 and 14. This gives teams at the bottom a chance to bounce back.

Arsenal will face Lille, Manchester United will go to Atletico Madrid, Barcelona will play away against Galatasaray, Bayern will visit Viking, and Manchester City will welcome PSG.

Liverpool will travel to LASK, while Como will visit Feyenoord. Other matches include Inter Milan against Club Brugge, Leipzig against PSV, Villarreal against Napoli, Roma against Real Madrid, Aston Villa against Fenerbahce, Shakhtar Donetsk against AEK Athens, and Borussia Dortmund against Bodø/Glimt.

With just one game played, the table is still tight. Matchday 1 has shown a divide: 16 teams have three points, two have one, and 18 are still looking for their first points in the league phase.
