UEFA has announced that Rafael Leão will wear Portugal’s famous No. 7 shirt for the next two UEFA Nations League matches. This comes after Cristiano Ronaldo left the national team camp.
Leão, who usually wears No. 17 for the Seleção, will be listed as No. 7 for Thursday’s match against Denmark in Copenhagen and for Sunday’s home game against Norway.
Football transfer expert reported on Thursday, "UEFA confirm Rafael Leão has been listed as Portugal No7 for the next two games following Cristiano leaving."
Fábio Silva, who just got called up, will take over Leão’s old number.
This number change is necessary because of UEFA Nations League rules. These rules state that the 23-player matchday squad must have consecutive numbers from 1 to 23 without any gaps.
Ronaldo left the Portugal camp on Wednesday. He did not play in the 2-1 win over Norway on Sunday.
The 41-year-old had played in the previous match, which was a 1-0 victory against Wales. That game was Jorge Jesus’s first match as coach.
Portugal is currently at the top of Group A4 after winning two matches. They will play at Parken Stadium tonight and then host Norway at Estádio do Dragão on Sunday.
